MX record configuration (mail handling)

The MX record is responsible for mail handling. If you want to separate the web service and mail handling, you should configure the records in the following way, depending on the variant:

(wherever your-domain.au was used, insert your own domain)

Domain DNS at registrar set to smarthost.au

If the website is to be served by smarthost servers while the mail is to be handled remotely, you should:

  1. modify the MX record for this domain by entering mail.your-domain.au in the destination field.
  2. change the type of the record named mail.your-domain.au to type A and set its value to the IP of the external server.
  3. (Optional) If the server uses DKIM and SPF, please:
    • obtain the value and the names of the DKIM record from an external host and add it to us as a separate TXT record (DON’T MODIFY THE EXISTING ONE)
    • modify the TXT record containing the SPF by adding the IP serving the external mail server.
  4. change the routing in the Email tab in cPanel to Remote mail exchange service.

If the website is to be hosted by an external server while mail is to be handled by smarthost servers:

  1. change the A record for this domain by entering the IP address of the external server in its value.
If you have subdomains that are also to use the remote server, you must also change their A records by entering the IP address of the external server in their value.
  2. change the MX record for the domain, specifying mail.your-domain.au at the destination.

Domain DNS set at the registrar to an external server

If the website is to be served by smarthost servers while the mail is to be handled remotely, you should::

  • change the A record supporting the domain on the external hosting by entering the IP address of the smarthost server in its value (usually it starts with 51.161… and it is visible on the right side in cpanel in the General Information section as Shared IP Address or Dedicated IP Address)
  • Additionally, if you have subdomains which are also supposed to use the smarthost server, you should also change their A records by entering the IP address of our server in its value.

If the website is to be served by an external server while mail is to be served by smarthost servers:

  1. Configure MX records according to the recommendations of the external hosting by setting the IP of the smarthost server (usually it starts with 51.161… and it is visible on the right side in cpanel under General Information as Shared IP Address or Dedicated IP address).
  2. Our servers use DKIM and SPF records, so you should:
    • obtain from our hosting the value and names of the DKIM record and add it to the external hosting as a separate TXT record (DON’T MODIFY THE EXISTING ONE).
    • modify the TXT record containing the SPF by adding the IP of the smarthost server (51.161…).

If the website as well as the mail are to be served by a smarthost server it will be most comfortable to change the DNS for this domain at the registrar to smarthost servers, i.e:

dns.smarthost.au (51.161.192.152)
dns2.smarthost.au (51.161.192.154)
